Myo-Inositol for Hormone Balance: A Complete Guide
Share
Myo-inositol is one of the better-evidenced supplements in women's health. The mechanism is specific, the research is solid, and the applications are targeted enough to be clinically meaningful.
Here's what you need to know.
What it is
Inositol is a naturally occurring sugar produced by the body. Of its nine forms, two matter biologically - myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol (DCI). Myo-inositol is the most abundant. It acts as a secondary messenger in insulin signalling and plays a direct role in FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) signalling, which governs ovarian function.
How it works
Insulin resistance causes the ovaries to overproduce androgens - testosterone and DHEA-S. This disrupts ovulation, drives cycle irregularity, and contributes to acne, hirsutism and hair thinning.
Myo-inositol improves insulin receptor sensitivity, which brings androgen production down and restores FSH signalling. The mechanism is specific and measurable - not vague adaptogenic territory.
Who it's for
Primarily women with PCOS. This is where the evidence is strongest - multiple RCTs showing improvements in cycle regularity, fasting insulin, testosterone levels, and oocyte quality. It has also been studied in women with subclinical insulin resistance, autoimmune thyroid disease, and gestational diabetes risk.
It is not a universal hormone supplement. If cycle irregularity is driven by low body weight, over-exercise, or chronic stress, myo-inositol is not the right intervention.
What the evidence shows
At 2,000–4,000mg of myo-inositol combined with DCI at a 40:1 ratio, studies show measurable improvements in ovulatory function, insulin markers, androgen levels, and oocyte quality. A 2019 clinical trial directly comparing seven different MI/DCI ratios found the 40:1 ratio was the most effective at restoring ovulation - outperforming every other ratio tested, including higher DCI concentrations.
What to look for in a product:
1. Dosage - the clinically proven Dosage is 2000mg Myo-Inositol and 50 mg D-chiro inositol. which makes it a 40:1 ration. Make sure to check this when buying any product.
2. Form - powder or capsules with a clearly stated dose per serving.
3. Label transparency - ingredient and dose visible, not inside a proprietary blend.
4. Folate - many studies pair myo-inositol with 200-400mcg folic acid. Worth looking for in a formulation.
5. We also added black pepper extract for better absorption.
Realistic timelines
Insulin sensitivity: 4–8 weeks. Cycle regularity: 3–6 months. Androgen markers: 3–6 months. Any product claiming results in days is not being straight with you.
