The Summer Skin Repair Guide: How to Reverse UV Damage Before It Becomes Permanent

The tan fades. The damage underneath doesn't - at least not on its own.

UV doesn't just cause sunburn. UVA, the wavelength that penetrates to your dermis, activates MMP enzymes that break down collagen. A single exposure can keep those enzymes elevated for days. In India, where UV index sits between 9 and 11 for most of the year, this isn't a seasonal problem. It's a daily one.

By the time the fine lines and laxity appear, the structural deficit has been building for years.

Here's what actually helps.

Stop the ongoing damage first. SPF 30 minimum, every day, reapplied if you're outdoors. UVA penetrates glass and cloud. If you're near a window, you're getting exposure.

Replenish your antioxidants. UV depletes glutathione faster than your body produces it. Astaxanthin, Vitamin C and Vitamin E support your skin's repair capacity from the inside. This isn't optional if you're under sustained UV load.

Support collagen synthesis internally. Topical collagen doesn't reach the dermis - the molecules are too large. Hydrolysed collagen peptides, taken orally at 5g daily, signal your fibroblasts to produce more of your own collagen. In a peer-reviewed trial on Asian skin types, this approach showed statistically significant improvements in elasticity within four weeks. Vitamin C is non-negotiable alongside it - collagen synthesis cannot be completed without it.

Be realistic about the timeline. The studies that showed meaningful skin improvement ran for four to eight weeks of consistent supplementation. Three weeks in and seeing nothing is not failure - it's not enough time.

One thing worth saying for Indian skin specifically: higher melanin delays the visible signs of photoaging, but doesn't prevent UV from reaching the dermis. The structural damage is happening. It just shows up later - and then all at once.

Start before you can see it. That's the whole point.
