The Truth About Multivitamins: Benefits, Risks, and Who Should Actually Take Them

Most multivitamins are designed for the label, not the body. One tablet. Every nutrient crammed in together. Take it whenever you remember.

That sounds convenient. It's also bad formulation science. Here's what most brands won't tell you - and what to look for if you're going to take a multivitamin at all.

The Problem With Most Multivitamins

A standard one-a-day multivitamin treats every nutrient the same. But your body doesn't work that way.

Nutrients compete with each other. Calcium blocks iron absorption. Zinc reduces copper uptake. Magnesium and calcium compete for the same transport pathways. When you put them all in one tablet and take it at breakfast, some nutrients cancel others out. You're swallowing 20 ingredients and absorbing a fraction of them.

Fat-soluble vitamins accumulate. Vitamins A, D, E, and K don't flush out like water-soluble ones. Over time, excess builds up - potentially leading to liver burden, hormonal disruption, and interference with other nutrients. More is not better. The right dose, in the right form, is better.

Your body runs on a clock. Insulin sensitivity, cortisol, melatonin, digestive enzyme production - these fluctuate predictably across the day. B-vitamins and iron support energy and metabolism, which peak in the morning. Magnesium and calming adaptogens support recovery and sleep, which the body prioritises at night. A single tablet ignores this entirely.

Who Actually Needs a Multivitamin

Not everyone does. But specific groups benefit significantly:

Women with irregular or restricted diets - if you skip meals, eat limited food groups, or follow a vegetarian/vegan diet, you're likely missing iron, B12, D3, and zinc from food alone.

Women aged 25–45 with hormonal concerns - nutrient demands shift with menstrual cycles, stress, and lifestyle. Deficiencies in magnesium, B6, and D3 are extremely common in urban Indian women, even among those eating well.

Anyone supplementing multiple individual nutrients - if you're already taking separate vitamin D, biotin, magnesium, and iron, a well-formulated multivitamin can consolidate and simplify, provided the doses and timing are right.

Anyone who isn't - if your diet is genuinely varied and nutrient-dense, and you have no specific deficiencies, a multivitamin may not add meaningful value. Supplementation should fill gaps, not create redundancy.

What a Well-Formulated Multivitamin Looks Like

If you're going to take one, here's what to evaluate:

Timing matters. Energy-supporting nutrients (B-complex, iron, adaptogens) belong in the morning when your body is primed for activation. Recovery-supporting nutrients (magnesium, L-theanine, calming herbs) belong in the evening when the body shifts to repair. A single tablet taken once a day ignores circadian biology.

Form matters. Magnesium oxide is cheap and poorly absorbed. Magnesium glycinate is more bioavailable and gentler on the gut. The same ingredient, wildly different results. Check what form of each nutrient is used, not just whether it's listed.

Dose matters. Many multivitamins include 15–20 ingredients at doses well below what published research considers effective. A label that lists an ingredient at 5% of the studied dose is marketing, not formulation.

Gender matters. Women's nutrient needs differ from men's - higher iron requirements, different hormonal support needs, different deficiency profiles. A "one for everyone" multivitamin is a compromise for everyone.

Why AKYA Built an AM/PM Multivitamin

This is the thinking behind AKYA's Women's Daily Multivitamin. Not two flavours of the same formula. Two distinct nutrient profiles timed to how a woman's physiology actually works across the day.

AM tablet: B-vitamins, iron, antioxidants, and adaptogens to support energy, metabolism, and focus when your body is primed for it.

PM tablet: Magnesium glycinate + citrate blend, L-theanine, chamomile, Shatavari, and low-dose melatonin to support muscle recovery, stress relief, hormonal balance, and sleep - when your body is in repair mode.

100% vegetarian. No artificial colours, gluten, or GMOs. Formulated for women aged 18–45.

The principle is simple: give the body what it needs, when it needs it. Not everything at once and hope for the best.
