Why Most Collagen Products in India Are Underdosed?

The Hidden Problem With Collagen in India
Collagen has quickly become one of the most popular supplements in India. From skin health to joint support, it is everywhere.
But there is one detail most people overlook. The actual effective dose.
Many collagen products in India either contain very small amounts per serving or do not clearly communicate how much active collagen you are getting. The result is confusion. People take collagen consistently but do not see meaningful changes. Eventually, they assume collagen does not work.
What Is considered an Effective Dose?
Collagen is a structural protein. It supports connective tissue, skin elasticity, joints, and overall tissue integrity. Because of this, the dose required is measured in grams, not milligrams.
Clinical studies typically use doses ranging from 2.5 grams to 10 grams per day, depending on the outcome being studied. Skin hydration studies often use lower ranges like 2.5 to 5 grams. Joint support studies may go higher.
But here is where it becomes important. Dose alone does not determine effectiveness. The quality of peptides, their molecular weight, and how they are processed play a significant role.
In simple terms, 5 grams of high quality, well hydrolyzed collagen peptides can perform better than 10 to 15 grams of poorly processed collagen. On the other hand, some highly specific bioactive collagen peptides may show effects even at lower doses.
This is why looking at grams alone without considering peptide quality can be misleading.
Why are many products still underwhelming?
1. Low Active Collagen Content
Some products include collagen in the ingredient list but provide only 1 to 2 grams per serving. While technically present, this may not align with the amounts used in most clinical research for visible outcomes.
Without adequate active collagen intake, results can be slower or minimal.
2. Confusion between Total Weight & Active Collagen
Another common issue is misunderstanding serving size.
For example, a sachet may weigh 7 grams or 8 grams in total, but that does not mean all of it is collagen. Some portion may include sweeteners, flavoring agents, vitamins, or minerals.
What matters is how many grams of actual collagen peptides are present within that serving.
3. Inconsistent Scoop Based Formats
Many collagen products in India are sold in tubs with a scoop. While convenient, this format often leads to variation. Not everyone levels the scoop the same way. Some days you may take less. Some days you may take more.
With collagen, consistency is key. Taking 3 grams one day and 6 grams the next reduces predictability.
A fixed dose format removes that variability and makes daily intake easier to maintain.
Why Quality matters as much as Quantity?
Collagen peptides are not all identical. Factors that influence effectiveness include:
• Source of collagen
• Degree of hydrolysis
• Peptide size and bioavailability
• Purity and testing standards
Reiterating, it is entirely possible for 5 grams of high quality collagen peptides to deliver better support than 12 to 15 grams of lower grade collagen.
This is why comparing products only on total gram weight without understanding peptide quality does not tell the full story.
The Bigger Picture
Underdosed collagen products are not always intentionally misleading. Often they are built around pricing, positioning, or taste preferences.
But as consumers become more informed, the focus is shifting toward active collagen content, peptide quality, and consistency of intake.
For example, in our own Essential Collagen Formula, each sachet weighs 7.7 grams in total. Within that, 5 grams are active collagen peptides. The remaining portion includes sweetener and supportive vitamins and minerals. This allows us to stay within clinically relevant dosing ranges while maintaining taste and ease of use.
The goal is not simply to have collagen in the formula. The goal is to provide a meaningful amount of well processed collagen peptides in a format that makes daily consistency simple.
